Every October, the same message rolls around: no drinking for 31 days. Full stop. You either make it or you don’t.
If that’s your thing, great. But it’s worth knowing that’s not actually where Sober October came from.
It was never about perfection
The first version showed up in Australia in 2008 as “Ocsober,” a fundraiser run by a children’s health charity. In 2014, Macmillan Cancer Support in the UK launched “Go Sober for October,” and people got sponsored by friends and family to skip alcohol for a month, with the money going to cancer care. It’s raised tens of millions of pounds since.
The point was never a purity test. It was: your choices around drinking can create something good, for you and for people you care about. The all-or-nothing challenge version came later.
We think the original spirit deserves a comeback, MM-style.
The idea: fundraise on your alcohol-free days
Here’s how it works.

- Decide what an alcohol-free day is worth to you. Maybe it’s what you’d normally spend on drinks that day. Maybe it’s a flat $5 or $20. Pick a number that feels real but doable.
- Every AF day in October, set that amount aside. A jar, a separate savings account, a note on your phone. Whatever you’ll actually keep up with.
- At the end of the month, “donate” it to your cause.
And your cause can be you.
Pick your cause
- A massage, a concert, new hiking boots, a night at a nice hotel by yourself. Something that says I showed up for myself this month and means it.
- Your people. Take your partner to dinner. Plan a day out with your kids. Fly a friend in. Drinking less often gives us more presence for the people we love. This makes that visible.
- A cause you believe in. Any organization doing work that matters to you. And yes, if Moderation Management has been part of your journey, we’d be honored to be on that list.
Or split it. There are no rules here except the ones you make.
Whatever way makes sense for you
This is the part I want to be really clear about.
Some MM members will do 31 AF days. Some will aim for 20. Some will do their usual pattern and notice the AF days add up more than they expected. Some are using this month to move toward abstinence, and some are using it to practice moderation. All of those are Sober October. All of those count.
If you have a drinking day, you don’t lose the jar. You just don’t add to it that day. Nothing is wiped out. Nothing resets to zero. That’s the difference between a challenge you can fail and a practice you can keep coming back to.
And honestly, that’s most of what we do at MM anyway: paying attention, making a plan, and noticing what happens. October just gives it a container and a payoff at the end.

Pick your number. Pick your cause. Tell someone, or don’t. Come to a meeting and say what you’re working on. And on November 1st, spend the money on purpose.
You’ll have put in the days. You’ve already earned it.
