Welcome to our October 2024 Volunteer Showcase! This month we catch up with Ramon Aldarondo. When Ramon joined Moderation Management (MM) in October 2023, he found more than just a program—he discovered a community that would change his life. Less than a year later, Ramon has become an integral part of MM, embodying the spirit of growth, support, and hope that defines our organization.

Ramon’s Transition to Volunteering

Ramon’s journey began as a participant seeking support for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Inspired by the encouragement and community he received at MM, he transitioned to a volunteer role in February 2024. Today, he facilitates the Sunday 7:00 PM meeting, co-hosts the Saturday strategy meeting at 5:00 PM every other week, and steps in for other meetings when needed.

“Our meetings are the lifeblood of MM,” Ramon shares. His dedication to creating a welcoming space for all shines through in his commitment to helping others. He notes, “It is refreshing to see so many newcomers looking for a safe and judgment-free program that Moderation Management provides.”

Michael John, MM’s Director of Volunteers & Meetings, emphasizes, “At MM, we believe in the transformative power of community support. Every volunteer like Ramon plays a crucial role in helping individuals navigate their journeys towards healthier relationships with alcohol.”

The Reward of Helping Others

For Ramon, the most fulfilling part of volunteering is witnessing the growth of individuals struggling with alcohol use. Seeing participants return week after week, checking in on their progress, brings him joy. He reflects, “MM has taught me to be honest about my AUD with myself and my family and friends. I’m no longer embarrassed to share my story.”

His personal transformation motivates him to continue giving back. Ramon encourages others to get involved, saying, “Even if it’s just a few hours per month, every bit helps.”

Life Outside MM

Beyond volunteering, Ramon enjoys spending time with his mother at church, playing darts and pool, and relaxing with his cats, Shadow and Starr. He also finds inspiration in motivational podcasts and quiet evenings with friends.

A Journey of Growth and Connection

Ramon’s story is a testament to the power of community and personal growth. From seeking help to offering it, he reminds us that helping others often leads to our own healing. His dedication to Moderation Management strengthens our community, one meeting at a time.
