A Moderation Management Success Story: How Gary Found His Way Back
Gary had been watching his drinking get worse for a few years. It didn’t increase dramatically: it just grew steadily, until it was threatening the things he cared about most: his marriage, his family, his work.
“I tried many roads to figure out a way to turn things around,” he says, “but everything was leading me to an ‘all or nothing’ solution, which is something that I did not feel was the right fit for me. But that was the only direction everyone was trying to point me. I felt like I was continuously failing…over and over.”
A Different Path In
Gary’s way into Moderation Management wasn’t a straight line. A neighbor mentioned the Oar Health platform and Naltrexone, and Gary decided to try them. That led him to MM, and to his first Newcomers’ Meeting.
“From the very first Newcomers’ Meeting, I finally felt like I was talking to an entire group of people who were going through, or have been through, everything that I was experiencing,” he says. “It was truly the first time that I didn’t feel alone and isolated with my problem.”
That first meeting made an impact. But as Gary kept coming back, something even bigger happened.
“As I continued with the meetings, it really gave me a sense of community, positivity, and hope…based on the stories and struggles that everyone in the groups shared about what they have gone through, or were going through, and most importantly, the success that so many of them have come to achieve over time.”
He also started to rethink what success even meant. “I finally started to realize that success doesn’t have to be perfection, and that success and failure are very relative terms.”
A Moderation Management Success Story
Gary is only four months into his MM journey. He’s clear-eyed about that, and he knows there’s more work ahead. But for the first time, he feels like he is moving in the right direction.
“By finally sitting down, taking stock, keeping track, realizing how bad my baseline was, and how much I have been able to improve upon those numbers in just a few months gives me a sense of strength,” he says.
He’s also found something he hadn’t expected: the ability to learn from setbacks rather than be crushed by them. “For the first time, I am able to recognize my achievements, and more importantly, I’m able to learn from my mistakes. The idea of actually being ‘aware’ and mindful of what I’m doing, what’s making me do it, and how I have been able to make changes is truly empowering.”
Gary attends two or three meetings a week when his schedule allows: no small feat with demanding work, two kids, and four different sports on the calendar.
“The meetings ALWAYS help,” he says simply.
Becoming a Donor
When Gary signed up as a recurring donor this month through MM’s Sip & Sustain campaign, he wrote a note to explain why.
“I’m happy to help contribute to something that has finally given me a place, and a way, to actually make things better for myself and everyone around me,” he wrote.
He described the meetings as “priceless”: a word that doesn’t seem like an exaggeration when you consider what had been at stake.
“The MM meetings really give me hope, strength, and a belief that I can make changes, just as so many [other members] have. I am excited about what MM has helped me do so far, and truly look forward to continuously improving as I move forward, even through all of the ups and downs.”
Gary’s story is part of MM’s Sip & Sustain campaign. If MM has made a difference in your life, consider becoming a monthly donor. Even a small recurring gift helps keep meetings running, resources available, and the community growing.
