Welcome to Moderation Management’s™ Listserv Sign Up & MM’s Moderation Online Support Community Listserv Guide
No matter how you got here, we think you’ll find this is the most compassionate, diverse, caring, flexible, and non-judgmental group of people ever. We’re also funny and smart, and most of us don’t like to be told what to do.
Some of us have been here for years. Some, like you, are brand new. And some of us step off the list for a period of time, then return to the fold when it feels right. The only common denominator is that we are not satisfied with our relationship with alcohol, and we want to do something about it.
Once you are subscribed, you may “post” messages to the listserv from your subscribed Email Address
by sending Email to our Listserv at:
And the system will send messages to your Email account.
We are a group of equals, so the minute you “stepped through the door” of MM you became just as valued and important as everyone else. Belonging to MM is all about making good choices. We’re glad you’ve chosen to join us!
This welcome letter to our online moderation support community contains useful information about how to get started as well as tips to help you get the most you can from your time here. You might want to save and/or print this message so you can refer back to it.
MM Listserv Guide & Information
Setting Up and Managing Your MM Listserv Email & Posts
At any time of day or night, 365 days a year, you and all MM Listserv members can send emails (“posts”) which can be read by every other MM’er (“posting to the list”). The MM community is a place to share our experiences and thoughts, to give each other encouragement and support, and sometimes just to be around other people who understand what it’s like to face the real-world challenges of managing our drinking.
Setting Up Your MM Email
You probably want to set up a separate email just for the MM Listserv. Using your regular email for the list can have two complications. (See NOTE below).
1. Privacy-
First is privacy. We have not had problems in the past with members’ email addresses being used for nefarious purposes, but since our subject matter can be misunderstood by others, it’s better to err on the side of caution. You can even set up an anonymous email account (or at least somewhat anonymous) by searching on the internet how to do it.
Your MM Listserv account can be set to send mail with any name you choose; subscribers are reminded that they probably should not use their real names when posting to the Listserv.
NOTE: If you originally signed up with a name or address you’d prefer to keep private, just go to https://www.moderation.org/online/listserv.html, and
1) unsubscribe your private address and
2) subscribe again with your new address.
2. Ease of Use-
The second reason is for ease of use. Sometimes the sheer volume of emails whirling around can be a little overwhelming. A separate MM Listserv email means you can look at it only when you want to, and your inbox doesn’t get jammed full.
Managing Your Email
You may receive your MM email in either REGULAR or DIGEST options.
Regular
With the REGULAR option, you’ll receive individual posts as soon as they’re sent. This is what most people use and is the best option if you want to dive right in.
Digest
If you choose the DIGEST option you’ll receive one long email containing about 25 messages either once a day or a few times each day (depending on list volume).
See the Online Groups page for the Listserv Management Form (VERY SIMPLE), and a collection of user guides and other materials:
We periodically survey searches on Google to check that list messages are not being copied anywhere outside our systems. We also check other services. (Yahoo, MSN, etc.) To date, we have found NO evidence that any Listserv messages or archives are being indexed by any search engine. In other words, list messages are not “google-able.”
How the MM Listserv Email Works
Sending Email to the List
You can only send messages to MMLIST from a subscribed email account. Be sure you are on an email account that matches your subscription.
To create a NEW email that will go to the whole list
Click on [Compose] or [New] (depending on your particular email)
Type in the “To” box
Type something in the “Subject” box
Compose your email
Click [Send]
NOTE: If you use Gmail, you will not be able to see your email on the listserv until someone responds to it. Don’t worry, the other members of the listserv can see your message.
Sending a Reply to the List
To send a REPLY to a post that will go to the whole list
Click on [Reply all]. NOTE: Hitting [Reply] will not send your message to the entire list, only to the individual.
You may need to “Trim your Post” which means DELETING the original
message from your reply. This is a good idea because only messages up to a certain size (20K) can be sent to the Listserv. If you send only your reply, it is more certain to be accepted by the Listserv.
In Gmail, click on the box with the three dots at the bottom of your reply to expand the email message to show the previous email thread. Highlight and delete this text.
Click [Send]

You want no more MM email?
On the Subscription Management Page you can choose to temporarily go “No Mail” while you’re on vacation or just want to stop receiving MM email f or a while. You can change your subscription back to REGULAR or DIGEST delivery whenever you want to begin receiving MM email again.
To unsubscribe and leave MM: Go to https://www.moderation.org/online/listserv.html, enter your email address under “To un-subscribe:” then click on [UNSUBSCRIBE – Leave the MM Listserv]. You will need to respond to an email confirmation.

Posting Tips
INTRODUCE YOURSELF: After you’ve signed up, we’d love to meet you and get to know you. You can send an introductory email to the list, and we guarantee you that you will be welcomed with open arms. Sometimes folks like to just hang out and listen in for awhile, and that is absolutely okay too. Do what feels right for you.
EMAIL THREADS: Most people have their email organized into threads, which makes it easy to follow conversations. One thing to note is that if you have an important question or an introduction or a request, it’s best to start a new post or thread. Sometimes a heartfelt ask for help is posted as a reply to the daily Sticky or another long thread, and it might not get the attention it deserves. And if no one answers, sing out again! This is not a place you need to hide.
POSTING LIMITS: No single post can be over 20K in size (which also means no attachments), and MM limits the total number of posts from each member to no more than 20 posts in any one day.
WHAT ABOUT MISTAKES? Don’t be the least bit concerned about making mistakes in spelling or grammar or composition. This isn’t a contest and nobody is grading you!
OFF-TOPIC POSTS: Almost any topic is OK to discuss, but if it clearly has NOTHING to do with drinking (like sharing a good joke or Aunt Mildred’s pie recipe) then please put “OT” in the subject line. Avoid topics that could easily lead to controversy (such as conversations about politics or religion). MM’s focus is on our common struggle with over-drinking, and our personal beliefs shouldn’t get in the way of this.
POSTING ETIQUETTE. Be honest, but be respectful. It’s OK to be direct – we’re all adults here – but it’s NOT OK to attack or belittle another MM member. Profanity is discouraged–be creative or use asterisks. We encourage you to refer to our User Policy
SOLICITATIONS
Misuse of the MM email list is rare. However, if you receive any emails addressed only to you that are asking for money, enticing you to join other non-MM groups, or any other inappropriate solicitations, please report it to
