When Paddy Morrissey joined Moderation Management (MM) in October 2020, he didn’t just find a program—he found a calling. Now, nearly four years later, Paddy has become an integral part of the MM community, embodying the spirit of growth, honesty, and support that defines our organization.
“Paddy has truly become the face and voice of MM, as one of our most well-known and beloved facilitators,” says Andrea Pain, MM’s Interim Executive Director. “He brings compassion and warmth to all who attend his meetings, newcomers and veterans alike. Paddy has been responsible for the growth and development of several online meetings, and his leadership within the Meetings Community has helped pave the way for many other facilitators to find their purpose at MM.”
Paddy’s journey began as many do—attending meetings to learn and stay motivated. His natural flair for performance, honed through years as a theater actor and stand-up comedian, soon led him to become a Meeting Facilitator. Today, he leads multiple meetings and coordinates the Facilitators Meeting with fellow volunteers.
“Being able to orchestrate a gathering of courageous, honest problem drinkers who are boldly seeking help and guidance is incredibly rewarding,” Paddy shares.
He finds particular joy in those moments when shared experiences illuminate aspects of an attendee’s struggle, fostering understanding and support.
Paddy’s path to volunteering was paved with personal growth. “Once I stopped lying to myself about my problem, I was given the opportunity to grow as a person, above and beyond drinking alcohol,” he reflects. This self-discovery has been transformative, increasing his gratitude and reinforcing his commitment to giving back.
For those considering volunteering with MM, Paddy offers this advice: “Tell our Volunteer Coordinators your passions and what you do best, then find the right position to attain at MM. If you are working in something that you love and relate to, you will be fulfilled and will want to give your time freely.”
Outside of MM, Paddy’s creative spirit continues to flourish. He completed his first novel, Middle Act, in which a 39 year-old standup comedian faces a decision: continue performing comedy or change his career. He’s given a possible shot at success, but will he make it? It’s a coming of middle age story.
He’s also currently working on a fundraising comedy video for MM, drawing on his extensive experience in comedy and advertising, look for it this Fall. And when he’s not volunteering or creating, Paddy is reveling in his new role as grandfather to 8-month-old Nina.
“To be able to do this work for MM is one of the highlights of my life,” Paddy says. “Pairing my passion, commitment, and humor makes it all worthwhile.”
Paddy Morrissey’s story is a testament to the power of honesty, community, and personal growth. His journey reminds us that in helping others, we often find the best in ourselves.
